This is excellent for emergency use and (my personal use) for when your power goes out. The FosPower comes with a built in radio, power bank, SOS button, USB port, charging Port, solar charging, hand crank for charging and a LED flashlight.
The LED Flashlight
The flashlight is very bright, I was impressed by the light alone. It has 3 modes, first mode is the far mode, shines a bright light to reach a distance, second is the low mode light which lights up the area in front of you and the last mode is full mode, it uses the other modes at the same time to light up near you and away from you.
This also has reading light underneath the solar panel which has two modes when opened. 1 light, 2 auto. auto enables a motion sensor that will turn on the light for 30 seconds any time it detects motion.
LED lights produce more light with less electricity so this flashlight is brighter and will last longer.
In the photo below you can see a small switch with “light“ and “auto”. This controls the reading light under the solar charger. The small bulb under it is the motion sensor.
The Hand Crank
The hand crank is the main reason I think this device is so important because you can spin the handle and it will charge the device. This will charge all of the devices features.
The handle is easy to turn and makes a little bit of noise. When it comes to charging, it is not super fast but it is decent when you have no other source of electricity.
If you have a problem with noise, say at night you do not want to wake anyone up or bother them. This can be a problem, however the noise it not excessive. it does get louder the faster you spin.
The crank can be lifted the flipped from the device. Then it can be rotated to generate energy. the knob at the end allows for ease of turning.
The Radio
The FOS has a built in radio (no you can not talk into it) you can tune into different stations, these include weather and music stations. It has an antenna that can be extended for better connection.
This can be helpful if your phone does not work, or will not connect to the internet (for example, bad cell towers or canceled data plan) However the radio does consume a lot of power from the FOS. useful only for short time uses.
The radio and dials are on the front of the device, the antenna is on the back.
the antenna can be flipped up and extended as shown.
Solar Charging
The Fos has the ability to be charged via sun, however it does not charge fast. Especially if it is not direct sunlight (By your window, in a shaded area)
After leaving the device by my window all day it only achieved 20% charge, and it was already near that charge level to begin with.
It’s a decent feature but it does not compete with the hand crank.
The USB Port and Charging Port
You can plug any usb into the Fos, it is meant for charging cables to charge other devices such as your phones. I love this feature because I can now charge my phone by using a hand crank. This is useful in the common case that your power goes out and your phone runs low on battery.
Being able to charge your phone makes the radio kind of useless, however if you just want a quick weather update then the radio may be best to use to save power.
The charging port allows you to charge the Fos without needing to use the hand crank or solar charger. so when you have power and expect to lose it, you can charge the Fos at a outlet. The Fos also comes with a charging cord to charge it.
There is a rubber cover That can be lifted to expose the ports.
The Power Bank
The power bank stores all of the energy in the device. it can store a decent amount of energy, and it also has a feature that allows you to see how much charge is in it.
Unfortunately it seems like it will slowly leak out it’s charging, meaning if you do not use anything on it over night, it will lose a small percent of its stored energy. It does not lose much, so it’s not all too bad since you can just crank it back.
It can still hold power for a long time and energy leak is common among rechargeable batteries.
The image below shows where the power bank is stored.
The SOS Button
The SOS button makes the Fos emit a loud beeping sound and flashes the light on and off. this can be turned off by simply Pressing the button again.
The manual says to activate the SOS you need to click the SOS button on the side. This is false, you need to hold the button for about 5 seconds for the SOS to active, you only need to click it to turn it off.
The SOS feature does not call emergency services, it only makes noise and flashes the light.
Located on the front of the device with the label “SOS” on the button.
My Personal Use
I use the device mainly for the flashlight when I walk around at night, but I will keep it for anytime my power goes out, so I can continue to use my phone without to much of a worry about battery.
Possible uses
Power outages
camping
emergency storage
emergency backpack
as a normal flashlight that can be recharged
as a power bank
just to have because it’s cool
exploring
replace your old flashlight
back up tool
Extras
The Fos has a feature that lights up when you are putting power into it via solar or crank.
You can see how much battery is left when you use any feature of the device, I click the SOS button because it has no use unless you hold the button.
I discovered that if you have the reading lights auto switch inbetween “light“ and “auto” the light does not turn on at all. I am unsure if this is a feature or mistake, but it can be useful for angling the solar charger at the sun without using the reading light.
Specifications can be found on the items page.
Comes with: FosPower radio flashlight, charger cord to charge the Fos, manual.
Flashlight 10/10
I was surprised by the brightness and it is very effective.
Solar Charger 4/10 (Not fully tested)
it was functional, not effective. more test need to be made.
Hand Crank 7/10
Works very well combined with the LED flashlight, not great for getting a full charge quickly.
Battery 7/10
Large energy storage and is rechargeable by many different ways, has a very low leak of power over time.
Radio 8/10
Works as intended, has many channels and a good antenna, high battery drain.
I spend $35 on this and in my opinion it was worth my money.
